BADEN-BADEN’S RICH HISTORY

The city of Baden-Baden was founded 2000 years ago in the interest of mankind. In the 19th century, it became the "Summer Capital of Europe", and its reputation remains strong to this day.
Baden-Baden is a member of the "Great Spas of Europe" and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 24 July, 2021.

Baden-Baden has a rich cultural history dating back to antiquity. Its heyday as the "Summer Capital of Europe" in the 19th century is still reflected in the townscape today. During this time, Baden-Baden was one of the best European spa towns in the world. This was reflected, among other things, in its unique urban development, which can still be experienced to this day, and which makes it a special type of town.

The Great Spa Towns of Europe are a group of eleven important European spa towns in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, and Great Britain.

As a European initiative, they were jointly nominated for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The global significance and the outstanding universal value are based on the fact that the "Great Spa Towns of Europe" are a representative testimony to the complex settlement history, social, and cultural phenomenon of the European spa tradition. The roots of this tradition date back to antiquity, but it experienced its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional bathing cultures exist in many parts of the world, but what distinguishes the "European" spa tradition from these is the use of healing springs, which have led over centuries to the development of a particular type of settlement, the European spa town.
